The Holy Savior in the Wilderness

ða wæs se hælend gelæd fram gaste on westen: þæt he wære
fram deofle costud;
and þa þa he fæste feowurtig daga and feorurtig nihta þa
ongan hyne syððan hingrian;
And þa genealæhte se costnigend and cwæð. Gyf þu godes
sunu sy cweð þæt þas stanas to hlafe gewurðon.
ða andswarode se hælend; Hit ys awriten. ne leofað se man be
hlafe anum ac be ælcon worde þe of godes muðe gæð:

Then was the Savior led from the Spirit into the wilderness: that he might be tempted by the devil; and when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, then afterward he hungered. And then came the tempter and said. If thou be the Son of God, say that these stones be made bread. Then answered the Savior; It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
