The Martyrdom of Saint Christopher

Þa sende se Casere Decius cæmpena to Cristofore; he sæde þæt gif Cristoforus þanne nolde to him cuman, þæt þa cæmpan hine ofslogen and him brohten þæt heafod to, þæt he mihte geseon hulic þæt hundes heafod hit wære. Þa þa cæmpan Cristofore to coman, þa ne dorstan hie no þas meahtigan and egefullan wihte genealæcean, ac þa hwæþre ferde Cristoforus mid him to þæm ceastre þe Samo is nemned. Þa he þa com to þæm Casere ond he geseah Cristofores ansyne, þa wundrade he swa þæt he feoll of his domsetle. Þa sealde se Casere him gold and seolfor and gimmas þæt he hine gecierde fram Cristes geleafan. Þa he þæt ne geþafade, þa het se Casere Decius hine tintregian, ond þy ilcan dæge bebead he þæt hine man lædde to beheafdunga, and þa geendode Christoforus his martyrdom on Samo ceastre.

Then Emperor Decius sent soldiers to Christopher; he said that if Christopher would not come to him, then the soldiers should slay him and bring his head so that he might see what kind of a dog’s head it was. When the soldiers came to Christopher, they dared not approach such a mighty and fearsome being, but nevertheless Christopher went with them to the city which is called Samo. When he came before the Emperor and saw Christopher's face, he wondered so much that he fell from his throne. Then the Emperor gave him gold and silver and jewels in order to turn him away from Christ's faith. Since he did not allow this, Emperor Decius commanded him to be tormented, and on the same day ordered that he be led to beheading, and thus Christopher completed his martyrdom in Samo city.
