The Feast of Saint Christopher

1. On þæm eahta ond twentigoþan dæg þæs monaþes, biþ Sancte Cristofores þæs miclan martyres
þrowing-tid. Cristoforus com of þæm leode þær men habbaþ hunda heafod, and of þæm lande
þær æton men hie self. He hæfde hundes heafod, ond his loccas wæron lange, ond his eagan
scinon swa leohte swa morgensteorra, ond his teþ wæron swa scearpe swa eofores tucxas. He
wæs Gode geleafful on his heortan, ac he ne mihte sprecan swa swa mon doþ. Þa bead he God
þæt he him sealde monnes gespræc. Þa com sum engel on hwitum gegirelan ond eþode him on
þone muþ; þa mihte he siþþan sprecan swa mon.

On the eighteenth and twentieth day of the month, it is the feast of Saint Christopher, the great martyr. Christopher came from a nation where men have dog heads, and from a land where men eat themselves. He had a dog's head, and his locks were long, and his eyes shone as bright as a morning star, and his teeth were as sharp as a lion's claws. He was faithful to God in his heart, but he could not speak as man does. Then he prayed to God that he might be granted human speech. Then an angel came in white raiment and touched him upon the mouth; thereafter he could speak like a man.
